Backup Data to the Storage System, How important is it?
We can not avoid talking about Backup Data without mentioning the Storage System when using a computer.
A Storage System is required to store the software programs and enable you (the computer user) to keep a permanent records of the work that you have done using the computer.
When using the computer, the data is stored temporarily with the help of the Random Access Memory (RAM for short). It holds the information as data on your current work when you use the software (while the computer is still on). The information is lost when the computer is shut down (or turn off). If you do not save the work you have done into a storage medium as a backup data when quitting the program, your data would be lost.
The storage system that is use for the backup can consists of devices that allow you to save the information about the work you have done on the computer. They are called storage devices.
Storage devices are chosen depend upon the capacity or amount of data that you want to save. Every storage device have a limit capacity of storing backup data.
Since the storage capacity needed for certain software programs have been getting larger. The storage system that applies for storing information on such scale has also increases.
Previously, you can save your backup data onto a 1.44 MB Floppy Disk. Nowadays, we have storage devices with larger capacity compare to the Floppy Disk such as; Pen Drive (Thumb Drive), CD, DVD, External Hard Drives and Memory Cards (Flash Card).
The choice for using a suitable storage device can be determine by 2 factors:
1.How much data you need to store
2.How fast the storage device can store your backup data (rate of data transfer).
Hard Disk are the most common medium used as a storage device. It is part of the computer components and convenient for the user to save and keep the data inside the computer's internal memory (Internal Storage System of a computer).
Using the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM allow the user to write the data. Providing the ROM Drive (Read Only Memory Drive) have the function of writing the data on CD's or DVD's. The task of writing data on a CD or DVD is called 'Burning' (No, we do not imply that we actually burn these CD/DVD with fire, it is just a catch phrase).
Storage devices like Pen Drive and External Hard Drive are used by connecting them via USB slot. It act as an external storage system where it allows the user for easy access (plug and play). Due to its size, they are convenient to be carried wherever the user may go.
Flash card is similar to the use as an external storage device. They are connected using a card reader (that is if the computer have a card reader install in their system components). Flash card is considered as the smallest medium of storage system. Their size enables them to be used on Mobile phones, Digital camera and Digital Video Camera.
