Setting up a Wireless Network connection or Wifi using a router
What is a "Wireless Network" or "WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)"???
Wireless or Wifi allows the communication between the computers and peripherals using radio frequency (RF) transmissions. Compare to the other kinds of LAN (Local Area Network), this particular networking does not use any cable. The network uses a router to transmit the Radio Frequency (RF) to the computers for connections.
How to set up Wireless network connection?
Things that you must have to make this possible are:
- Of course, a computer (duh!!!)
- An internet connection (broadband connection is the best choice)
- Ethernet cables
- ADSL modem (this is a modem that a broadband connection use)
- A wireless router (a router which usually have antennas connected on them).
If you are ready, Let us start:
STEP 1:
Identify the location of the Ethernet socket on your computer (most computer nowadays are provided with an Ethernet socket which is located at the back of the computer). If you are not sure that you have an Ethernet socket installed within your computer or PC, you can buy them at the nearest computer retailer if you haven't got one.
STEP 2:
Shut down your computer. Plug in the ADSL modem and the Wireless router to the wall socket.
STEP 3:
Connect the cable from your computer to the Wireless router using an Ethernet cable. Then connect a different Ethernet cable from the Wireless router port to the ADSL modem. (*Remember: any connection that is made from the ADSL modem to the wireless router is considered as the main port).
STEP 4:
Start up your computer, turn the ADSL modem power on (wait for a minute), then you turn the wireless router power on. Open your internet browser to check the connection.
STEP 5:
You can use a laptop or any other computer which support a wireless connection to test the wireless range of your router.
That is how you set up a Wifi network for your computer at home.
